Hair Theatrical Production Project SCAD
March 2026
Costume Design Renderings
For this project we were tasked with costume designing a musical of our choice from start to finish. With the final element of the project was to create a costume an actor could wear.
I choose the musical Hair as it’s a musical that I grew up with with and I felt it would be an interesting challenge for me to costume a period piece that combines civilian clothes as well as uniforms.
George Burger
When costuming the character of George Burger the main character trait I wanted to pull from was his immaturity. I wanted his clothes to be stereotypical because he has a air of posturing in his use of American symbols of denim and the flag to get a reaction.
Claude Hooper Bukowski
Unlike most of the other characters, Claude has a few different costumes. For this project I choose to depict him in the uniform he is seen in at the end of the show. I find this moment really poignant as he is being sent to his death. His uniform is purposefully oversized as I wanted to highlight most of the draftees were children. His uniform is accurate to the period with boots made for jungle combat and a tool belt. The last remanent of his personality are the lack of weapons and his leather bracelets (worn throughout the show).
Sheila Franklin
Shelia comes from a richer background than the other hippies do. She went to NYU and I wanted to show that within her costume. Her clothes would be made out of nicer fabric and are more tailored. She cares more about appearances and is a headstrong person. I chose pants and a multi-colored top for Shelia as she wants to be more of a leader than the other woman.
Jeanie
Jeanie is a very dreamy, psychedelic character who is also very pregnant! I chose a purple and blue colors because I felt they encapsulated her feminine and airy nature. She cares about the environment so she wears natural fabrics like cotton. The knitted hat and shawl she made herself. Her outfit has wear and tear but she doesn’t care. She is proud of her pregnant belly and not afraid to show it bare.
Hud
Hud is an energetic and proud Black man. He is political and well informed, and often found in the center of the tribe’s protests and high jinks. His jokes are based on references including classic art and philosophy. Hud often holds flowers or gives them to others. I wanted his costume to reference Jimi Hendrix as Hud’s songs are more rock influenced; he is so charismatic and energetic. Hud is well dressed in rich colors and quality fabrics.
Final Costume
The final costume was created through sourcing rather than direct patterning. It was important to me to find clothes with rich colors and different textures. In my process of sourcing the costume pieces I reconsider the necklace design and decided to make one from scratch. The actor liked it so much he kept it!

Victorian Jacket
Bird of Prey
Costume Design
In another project for the same class we were tasked to make a Victorian Jacket from a pattern using a wild animal as our inspiration. We started with the corset then created the exterior of the jacket and the puff sleeves. This is the first time I made a entire costume piece from scratch. I took inspiration from a bird of prey; it’s anatomy as well as its lifestyle and habits. I felt the elegance of the bird was a good match for the Victorian style of the jacket especially the high collar and tailored elements. The interior corset was kept a natural color to evoke the bones of the bird. The sleeves are textured like a bird’s talons and the puff sleeves are blood stained. A point of reference for the dying technique used on the sleeves was Kate Hawley’s blood work in the movie Frankenstein. The rabbit pin is a nod to it’s diet. It also represents a trophy for this bird of prey character.
